This partnership is more than just a business deal for me – it's a dream come true. From our very first video call with Yong Mi, a passionate dive instructor, who had her own dive center in Zanzibar, I knew we had found something truly special. Yong Mi joined the call straight from a boat in the middle of the ocean, where she was leading an expedition – a clear sign that real action and commitment are at the heart of this organization. That energy and authenticity convinced me immediately: The Living Ocean is exactly the kind of organization we want to work with. We wanted to ensure that the 5 euros we donate from each Oceanfighter product sale go exactly where they're needed most – directly into projects that save the ocean.
I knew right away that I had to travel to Zanzibar to see this team and their work first hand. This partnership is our next big step in driving real change – a change that you support with every purchase.
Sunrise in Zanzibar: My First Turtle Patrol
The alarm went off at 4:00 AM – way too early, but I was wide awake. Sarah, a dedicated project coordinator, was already waiting for me at Under The Waves headquarters. The team and I then headed to a remote beach. Everything was dark – no moon, no stars, just the gentle sound of the waves and a sense of anticipation in the air.
Then came the moment: the sun slowly crept over the horizon, and the water began to glow with a warm golden hue. As we searched for turtle nests, I knew this was one of those moments you'd never forget.
The Turtle Patrol has a clear mission: find and protect nests. Sadly, turtle eggs are highly sought after in Zanzibar, but the team at Under the Wave has come up with a smart solution to change that. Locals who report nests receive $20 – a significant amount of money there and a strong incentive to protect the eggs.
Though we didn’t find any nests that morning, I gained something even more valuable: a deep insight into the team's passion and dedication. Their headquarters in Matemwe Beach is filled with a palpable love for the ocean. The enthusiasm with which they talk about their work is contagious – they truly live and breathe the ocean.
Exciting Projects for Ocean Conservation
During my time in Zanzibar, I got an in-depth look at the fascinating projects led by Under The Wave. Here are some of the highlights:
Sea Turtle Nesting Project: : In collaboration with the Melia Hotel, Under the Wave has created a sanctuary for sea turtle nests. Every year, around 24 nests containing approximately 2,400 eggs are safely relocated and protected.
Coral Nursery Project: : These coral nurseries provide a secure environment for young corals to grow, playing a crucial role in restoring damaged reefs. This is a vital step in preserving the health of our coral ecosystems.
Environmental Education Program: The team regularly conducts environmental education sessions for the local schools. From sustainable fishing practices to the importance of marine protected areas, they share knowledge to help safeguard the ocean for future generations. We provide year-round marine science classes at local schools, with each session lasting one hour. The classes are taught by our dedicated team of local marine biologists.
Reef Health Monitoring Program: Weekly monitoring of reefs and beaches helps track the impact of human activities on the delicate ecosystem, ensuring that any negative effects are understood and mitigated.
